San Antonio Fractures Lawyer

Broken and fractured bones are some of the most common injuries experienced by accident victims. This does not, however, mean that they should be taken lightly. Some severe breaks could require surgical intervention and if treated improperly, could result in serious infections and dangerous complications. Treating broken bones tends to be expensive. Fortunately, when someone else’s carelessness was the cause of an accident, an injured party could be entitled to compensation for related medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Contact our San Antonio broken bone & fractures lawyer for help with your case.

Types of Fractures

While we may often think of a fractured bone as a single type of injury, the reality is that there are a lot of different types of broken bones, including:

  • Stable fractures, in which a bone breaks cleanly in two in such a way that the ends line up and may only be slightly out of place;
  • Oblique fractures, which occur when a bone breaks at an angle;
  • Compound fractures, which occur when a bone is broken so severely that a piece actually pierces the skin;
  • Buckle fractures, in which the broken ends of a bone are driven into each other;
  • Transverse fractures, which occur when a bone breaks horizontally; and
  • Comminuted fractures, which occur when a bone breaks into multiple pieces.

Of these types of breaks, compound fractures are some of the most serious because victims have a higher chance of getting an infection. Comminuted fractures are also dangerous, as they require that a bone be set in multiple places, a notoriously difficult method of treatment. Which type of fracture a person sustains is largely dictated by the amount of force applied in the accident, the direction of impact, and the strength of the party’s bone.

Common Causes and Symptoms

Bones can withstand a great amount of force. When faced with extreme impact, however, like that experienced in a car crash, a bone will fracture under the pressure. These kinds of injuries are also often linked to:

  • Falls;
  • Collisions in a contact sport;
  • Acts of violence; and
  • Repetitive force or overuse.

Whatever the cause, fractures are typically accompanied by severe pain, swelling, bruising, and limited mobility. Even when healed, a person could still suffer from infection, ongoing pain, arthritis, and even permanent damage to the nerves and blood vessels, all of which can take a significant toll on victims and their families.

Treating Fractured Bones

Most broken bones require treatment, but what that treatment looks like will depend on the type of fracture in question. Stable fractures, for example, are the easiest to treat, requiring only immobilization with a fiberglass or plaster cast for  a few weeks. Comminuted and compound fractures, on the other hand, usually require surgical intervention, as well as the realignment and support of the bones with rods and screws. The scans, physical examinations, and implantation or surgical fusing that these treatments could require can quickly become financially overwhelming. Even once they have healed, victims may still need to attend physical therapy before regaining full mobility.
